While working on the adaptation of The Little Match Girl, the central question was not only how to present themes of death, but also the inevitability of human cruelty. The key challenge was finding the right balance — how to avoid oversimplifying the story intended for young audiences while still preserving the depth they need just as much as adults do. To enrich the brevity of Andersen’s original tale, the world of the production was developed through improvisations inspired by motifs from across his entire oeuvre.
