Based on Friedrich Schiller’s Mary Stuart
MARY STUART
Rivalry between power and love.
Premiere: Croatian National Theatre Osijek (2019)
This adaptation of Schiller’s original drama retained the central plot lines and seven key characters, enriching them with new textual segments that, in a Brechtian mode, recount the broader historical and political context of the narrative. Alongside political tensions, the play places strong emphasis on the private antagonism between Queen Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots — particularly on their shared romantic focus on the same man — a dynamic that further inflames their conflict and humanises both rulers.
